This Wadi is not so spectacular until we reach the graded road and a very steep climb to the beautiful village of Wukan. Stopping at Wukan we take a short trek up through the village and beautiful fields to reach the top where the views are just magnificent. After a picnic lunch, we re-join the Rustaq road and then again turn off to drive through the stunning Wadi Bani Auf. We pass the fearsome Snake Gorge to arrive at the picturesque village of Bilad Sayt surrounded by imposing mountains. We then backtrack a little before turning right past the village of Al Hajir. Now prepare yourself for the adrenaline rush you will receive when we drive up the gigantic cliff face! Once the roller coaster ride is over, we make a stop for the night at the Guesthouse”at the Top”, please bring warm clothes it can get cold at the top. Please note this road is often closed after rains so an alternative route must be taken.
Guest House ”at the Top” – Misfah Al Abriyeen – Jabrin – Bahla – Jebel Shams
After breakfast, we make our way down to the quaint village of Misfah Al Abriyeen, enclosed by spectacular date palms and cliff faces. We take a stroll along the Falaj irrigation channels and paths. From Misfah we drive to Jabrin Castle, then onto Bahla Fort (UNESCO world heritage site), After lunch at a local restaurant, we head up to the Mountain of the Sun, Jebel Shams where we can look over the Grand Canyon of Oman for some awesome views. We stop for the night at a resort high on Jebel Shams.
Jebel Shams – Balcony Walk – Nizwa or Jebel Akhdar
After breakfast, we drive the short journey to the start of the Balcony walk. This walk is not too arduous and is suitable for most people of moderate fitness. It meanders along just below the edge of the Grand Canyon and leads to a rock pool and an abandoned village at the end of the path The scenery is truly spectacular. After gathering our breath, we drive back down the Jebel to Nizwa to visit the Nizwa Fort and the Souk. Tonight we will stay in Nizwa or drive up to Jebel Akhdar we leave both options open it is often difficult to find good value accommodation in Nizwa. If we drive up to Jebel Akhdar we will stay at the Jebel Akhdar hotel ( all the other hotels are extremely expensive).
Nizwa or Jebel Akhdar – Wadi Bani Khalid – Desert Camp
If we stay at Nizwa we first drive up to Jebel Akhdar to admire the views before driving to Wadi Bani Khalid. The Wadi has deep blue pools surrounded by spectacular mountains and date palms making it a perfect place to soak up the sun, go for a swim and absorb some of Oman’s natural beauty. Wadi Bani Khalid is one of Oman’s most popular destinations and can be very busy at weekends or local Holidays. Bring your swimming gear! A swim in the rock pools is a must, after drying off we head for the Desert Camp which is hidden away deep in the Wahiba sands to escape all light and noise pollution from the nearby town of Badiya, enabling you to have an authentic desert experience. We will arrive before sunset to ensure we witness the sun setting over the golden sand dunes and afterward, enjoy a traditional Bedouin dinner possibly followed by a campfire, with a magical sky full of stars.
Masirah is a truly stunning Island with some white sandy beaches it is very popular with surfers and kite surfers in the summer months. Today we drive around the Island and then in the afternoon relax on a beach. We will ask the locals where the best place is to see Turtles
Masirah Island – Turtle Beach
After breakfast, we catch the Ferry back to the mainland. from the Ferry port at Shanna, we actually follow the same coast road that we drove down before. The road is so spectacular that you will certainly enjoy it a second time. We follow the coast all the way around to Ras Al Hadd to stay at Turtle Beach.
If you did not see the Turtles on Masirah Island, there is a second chance. The resort can arrange optional Turtle Tours please note the Turtle watching tour is not included. Note the Peak season for turtles are the hot summer months so please do not be disappointed if you do not see turtles. The resort is just a fabulous place to stay anyway.
Turtle Beach – Sur – Wadi Shab
Today we drive north up the coast. Our first stop is at Sur. which historically was a center of shipping trade to East-Africa. Sur is also famous for boat building and Dhows can still be seen being built in the traditional way that has not changed for hundreds of years (except the engine of course). Just after Sur, we pass one of the main economic lifelines of Oman, the LNG plant. This is where Gas is compressed under great pressure into liquid form and is transferred to giant LNG tankers and shipped to energy-hungry markets around the world. We then drive to the very popular Wadi Shab. A hike along Wadi Shab is not very challenging, however, it can get very slippery in the rock pools before entering the caves, so please ensure you bring proper footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. To reach the beautiful waterfall at the end of the hike you must swim through two small pools and a key hole cave! If you aren’t confident with swimming, please let us know and our guide will carry a life-jacket for you. Bring a waterproof camera if you have one! We will stay the night at the Wadi Shab hotel.
Wadi Shab – Bimmah Sink Hole – Wadi Arbeieen – Wadi Dayqah Dam – Wadi Mayh –Muscat Airport
After breakfast overlooking the magnificent coastline we drive to Hawiyat Najm Park where the popular Bimmah Sink Hole is located. The Sink Hole is a lovely place to swim and jump off the rocks or just dip your feet in for a fantastic free fish spa as it contains many “doctor fish”.
After cooling off we drive along the coast to turn off at Dibab and drive through the mountains to Wadi Arbeieen Sssssssh Please do not tell anyone about this Wadi and let’s hope there are not too many other people here. The large rock pool and the waterfall are magnificent. It is great fun to jump off the rocks and swim as far as you can against the current of the waterfall. From Wadi Arbeieen we drive through a Geological Wonderland to emerge surrounded by date plantations in Wadi Dayqah. We visit the impressive Wadi Dayqah dam After lunch we head back to Muscat via Wadi Mayh. The drive through Wadi Mayh gives a snapshot of the Omani way of life in the wadis with old houses and lush date plantations what a contrast to the modern urbanization of Muscat which is so close
The tour finishes at Muscat Airport or your chosen accommodation.
